Sorry For The Hiatus!!

I’ve actually been quite busy over the last ((..checks how long it’s been..)) WOAH :O the last month and a half!!

Sorry about that!! No posts, though no new views, either, come to look at it..

Ohh well, thousands of views is not really why I write, anyways 🙂 it’s a hobby ..that I don’t always have the time to do..

Over the last 6 weeks I had my hours boosted up even more for a little while whilst it was busy over the school holidays, but now they’re over, my hours have been cut riiiight down to a minimum of 6 a week 😦 . As well as that, I’ve had to take a week off, after having over-done it with cycling, squats and climbing in-and-out of my Dad’s lorry last week, ohh, and completing an “Treetop Challenge” at Howlett’s Wild Animal Park..

Howlett’s Animal Park is working with the Aspinall Foundation – a charity that works to protect endangered species, they do conservation work and have a breeding program. All percentage of the ticket sales go towards supporting the Aspinall Foundation, so every time you visit you are helping the animals 🙂 .

My Mum and Stepdad took me to the park as a late birthday present. I had my 20th birthday on the 14th August – not a teen anymore!! When we went to the park, I took fruit for my lunch and snacks, and they included a whole half of a watermelon!! I ate around the corner from the main tables, just so that I didn’t have to explain to people why I was eating so much ((which is silly, I know. Could have done this)), but I did get to give the melon rind to a park worker, who smiled and said that he’d give it to the honey badger 🙂 . I got to share my lunch with a honey badger 😀 !!

As well as that, I have been trying to keep up with my squats, planning on going swimming again soon and really want to be on my bike more!! Next week I plan to be at Pat’s house, from Monday – Saturday-ish, so I’ll be cycling to-and-from work, and hopefully my boss will give me extra hours because I couldn’t work this week!! That’s an extra 8-ish miles a day on my work days, as Pat lives a bit further.

I’ve been eating loads of carbs 😀 !! For example..

WP_20130819_005Fruits of course – plus a few yummy avocados lately in my salads and sauces for my pasta. Ignore Pat’s Cherry Bakewell and lollipop underneath 😉 they shouldn’t be in my fruit bowl!!

WP_20130827_001[1]A corn pasta meal with a gorgeously thick green sauce overtop that I made. I’ll start posting some high-carb cooked meal ideas on the blog soon, for anyone that is interested. I had this over a bag of pre-mixed salad leaves. Yum 🙂

WP_20130819_003I got this MASSIVE watermelon from a Morrissons supermarket. It costed almost £7 but it was soooo worth it!! Some of the best watermelon I have ever tasted. I need to get one of these again before the season ends completely!!

WP_20130906_015This was actually my dinner 2 nights ago 🙂 it consisted of brown rice, butternut squash and a sauce made with the squash, some low-sodium bouillon and a handful of dill. It was so good and really satisfying 🙂 I love carbs!!

I aim to eat as much raw produce as possible, but when I can’t get enough for any reason, or if what I have at home is not yet ripe, I’ll have a high-carb, low-protein and low-fat cooked meal in the evening, or for lunch as well as dinner, if I need to. I’ll make this up from either corn pasta, potatoes, sweet potatoes, brown rice or quinoa and have it with whatever veggies I have on-hand, including greens whenever I can. I feel really great doing this and am the healthiest I have ever been 🙂 . My OTHER Blog, Lots of Fruit, Jobs and 30BAD

Hey there 🙂

A lot has happened since my last post ((ohh no, she’s said that before and it was depressing..)), in lots of good ways ((woohoo!!))!!

It’s the middle of the summer here in the UK and in Kent we have had some really great weather. OK, apparently we’ve got a heat wave over here, but that’s so different to our usual kind of weather ((rain, sun, rain, sleet, sun, snow, rain.. – sometimes in the same day 😛 )) that people have been really enjoying it, going out to beaches and having BBQs and garden parties, running and cycling more, playing with kids outside, it’s really great to see 🙂

Also of course, it means it’s time for ICE CREAM!! Or “Nice Cream” in my case 😉 , this one being a vanilla and “chocolate” ice cream sundae that I had for dinner ..on a Sunday 😛

So, what else have I been up to?? Well, last week on Wednesday, I got a call-back for a 3-day job, helping to sell strawberries & cream and other fruits at the Kent County Show. I got it 🙂 and then the next day I got another call from Cobtree Park Café, a tiny little outside café in a country park, only about 2 miles from me!! So I went there for an informal interview and was told the hours – only 15:00 – 18:00, but it’s certainly better than nothing!! I’m just selling drinks and ice creams, crisps, chocolates and cakes, so it’s probably only going to be a summer job, but I finally feel like I’ve caught a break, and that’s something 🙂 .


So, I started at the County Show on Friday at 08:00 and worked with a guy called Morris, or Mo, for short. We got on well and he was nice and got on with everyone else. In fact, he kept giving me bits of fruit to try, as we were prepping all day continuously, and on Saturday I came away with a cup full of watermelon and grapes, an overflowing pint of cherries and over a pot of strawberries!! Thanks, Mo!! It was really warm over the 3 days, and we were right in the corner, at the entrance to the food tent, so it got very hot and tiring after a while – especially on Saturday. I also helped out a girl called Lea and another guy called Jazz, making fruit smoothies and selling different fruits. By the end of each day I had bright red hands and very sticky clothes 😛 but it was all great fun and I wish that I could do it full-time!!

I started work at Cobtree yesterday ((Monday)) and found it very slow-paced compared to the show, but it’s not too bad. I don’t go in until 15:00 so that should mean that I have a lot of time to do things in the morning, but today I have been very unproductive.. I haven’t even done my squats, yet!!

As you may have read, I have a new blog, that I started up in April, called Simply LFRV ((Low-Fat, Raw Vegan)). I created it in hope that I could assist people who are interested in the lifestyle, inspiring them with recipes, my favourite LFRV and LFV, tips, fruit info and advice.. Hoping that this weather stays for a while. I’ve really been enjoying getting out there on my bike, seeing how many miles I can get in on TribeSports, of course selling ((and eating copious amounts of..)) fruit in the sunshine, going for long walks with Pat and sun-bathing in his back garden 😛 .

Fruity Recipes!!

Here are those fruit-filled recipes I promised 🙂 they are really simple and so decadent, you won’t believe how healthy they are!!..

Right, so that first one is a Sinless Raspberry Soft-Serve..

Raspberry Soft-Serve

3 Frozen Bananas

200g Frozen Raspberries

Nothing else!!

Simply Throw the ingredients into your food processor or blender, allow to defrost slightly ((about 1 or 2 minutes, depending on the power of your machine)) and whizz up until completely smooth.

So simple, so delicious, so I-can’t-believe-it’s-healthy-but-it-is!!

Now, onto the next recipe..

Do NOT be put off by the colour, despite that hidden ingredient, all you taste is fruity deliciousness – I promise!! I like to call this one Peachy Green.. Here we go….

Peachy Green Smoothie

2 Bananas ((preferably frozen))

2 big ((or 3 smaller)) ripe Peaches ((may be fresh or frozen))

1 handful of Greens ((I used Spinach here, but Kale works just as well 🙂 ))

Again, this recipe could not be simpler:
Blend all ingredients, adding water, as needed, to make into a gorgeous smoothie, or, if you’d like, just blend it all up and eat with a spoon 😛 – and call it breakfast or dessert 😉

Confessions and a New Outlook….

Guess what??

Yup, I failed the programme.. It’s not even over yet and I can say that easily.

I’m putting my lows down to a painful hip/lower back injury that is pretty much debilitating at the moment.. This, and it being the “wrong time of the month”, freezing, wet and windy over here and ohh yes, I’m on my own again!!

I’m still juicing every day and am trying to ignore the “cravings” that are all in my head and NOT in my stomach. Strangely, I’ve been “craving” a lot of porridge, nut-butters and stir-fries. The nut-butters I can understand, as they are high in fats and often salt, and of course the majority of oats is pretty dense carbs. But stir-fries?? Hmmm, I guess I just missed chewing my veg as I had been drinking all of my meals 😉

My new “plan”??

Well actually, as soon as I’m feeling a bit better I want to create my own “programme” to follow. I am starting to research the posistive benefits of vegetable and fruit juices, both by learning through Jason Vale‘s books and also finding things out online.

What I’m finding is that people tend to eat and drink junky foods and drinks for so many years before even realising that they are doing wrong. It’s not until these people are overweight and/or find that they are getting symptoms they’ve never had before, from illnesses, breathing difficulties, skin “eruptions”, depression, etc, etc..

Then they see these “detox” pills/capsules/patches/drinks out there in the shops and think that they can just pop one or two of these and carry on as they have been. How ridiculous is this??!! We flood our bodies with stodgy, artificial, hard-to-digest, high-sugar, high-fat, high-salt “foods”, and then expect to fix it by putting some other artificial thing into our bodies to “make it better”.. Um, I’m pretty sure it doesn’t work like that 😉

So, what DOES work?? The answer to that could not be more SIMPLE!!

NATURAL nutrients, vitamins, minerals, RAW PLANT ENERGY and a bit of commitment on our part.

What am I talking about?? JUICE, of course :).

Really the answer is SO simple!! And all you need is a juicer and a blender in your home. The supermarket has the rest 😉

A lot of people out there seem to avoid veg and fruits like the plague, merely assuming that they “don’t like them” and that is that. The reality is that the big-chain food companies out there are advertising their “enriched”, “better-for-you” products in such a way that customers believe they are getting genuine nutrition. The sad reality is that what the companies use to “enrich” foods are just more chemicals or isolated vitamins that are no longer in their natural state or balanced with other enzymes, such as they are in fruits and vegetables. In fact, every single fruit and vegetable has just the right balance of the good stuff to do its job. It’s all already “chemically-balanced” by nature’s way. SO STOP MESSING WITH IT!! Eat a damn apple, not that chocolate bar, for goodness sake!!

At the end of the day, the truth is we all know that a carrot, for example, is better for us than say, a packet of crisps. Yet every day there are people out there consuming all the crisps, chocolate, take-aways and so-on, then looking out for the next best Celebrity Diet. What sad creatures we are, indeed..

Anyways, you have probably noticed that this post has quite a different tone to it than any previous one. I guess I’ve found my passion.

My Juicy Journey. Day 5….

Well, I have been doing the 7-day juice programme for 5 days now and am ashamed to say that I messed up a bit. Actually more than a bit…. I stupidly let some feelings and stress get to me and reacted to it in the same way that I usually do.. with food.. peanut butter to be exact….

Yes, I am annoyed at myself, but I will continue on with the rest of the programme as planned, and NOT trip up again. Hopefully I go through with the plan again in a few months time and pass through it without any slip-ups, but this time I must accept what has happened and move on. That’s all I can do.

Next time I’ll know, I need to relax. NOT to have the “diet mentality”, and that things happen. Stress is very much a part of all our lives. How we deal with it is another thing entirely. Many of us feel like shouting, screaming, blaming everyone around us for our own mistakes and often mentally and sometimes even physically abusing ourselves.

When we act in the wrong way ((blaming ourselves and others, giving up on problems, hitting things, shouting, however it may be)), we just make the problem worse!! I, for one, really need to practice not doing this. I must find a way to improve the situation, make it better before it’s really a big problem.

In the end, by doing un-constructive things, by digging ourselves an even deeper hole, we make it harder and harder for ourselves to climb back out. Out in the fresh air, where the problem is no longer a problem but an obstacle, the hole that we must learn not to fall into.

We must learn from our mistakes, dodge the pitfalls, work out how to improve the situation. And how?? By working toward something that IS worth our time. Instead of always looking down, worrying about that hole, look up, right up, for what you DO want to happen. Set yourself a goal, a target, so that you can forget about the hole and move up in life, to greater things.

This is my plan. To let go what I have done and to move on to improving the current situation. I made a mistake. I felt terrible about it. I’ve learned to not make that same mistake again. It’s happened. There is nothing that can be done to change the past.

So, onwards and upwards….

I will write a follow-up of the programme after the 7 days are up so that I can share with you the magic of pure, natural, fresh juices, accompanied by lots of juicy pictures, like this one:

In the books, Vale explains which nutrients, vitamins and enzymes are in the different juices, and this green beauty is literally brimming with vitamin B, calcium, vitamin C, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium and loads of antioxidants. It is great for: cleansing the body, hlping to lower cholesterol and it even helps to protect against cancer!!

On top of that, it only has 4 ingredients!!

Getting Juiced 4 2012!! Plus a quick WIAW..

Hi peeps!!

I will do a quickie WIAW today, then continue with the rest of todays post ;).

My latest eats have consisted of: LOTS of oats!!

Topped with Peanut Butter and Emma’s Maple PB Granola – so good!! Mine crumbled a bit but this can probably will definitely be avoided in the future with EVEN MORE PB!! Can’t ever have too much nut-butter, of any kind!! 😉

Pumpkin Oats – yes, I know it’s Spring-time now, NOT Autumn/Fall/whatever you call it where you live :P, but I had a small pumpkin ((a munchkin!!)) leftover that I got aaaages ago and just couldn’t think up anything to do with it. So the night before I made this  deliciousness, I simply cooked this little guy when I was making dinner, so it would be ready in the morning :):

See, it was tiny and cute!!

Creamy Oats with a whole sliced banana and a sprinkling of carob powder – a match made in heaven!! I had this on the day of the 6-miles and it fuelled me perfectly 🙂

Suprise, suprise, she only got pictures of breakfasts :S – it’s true. I haven’t really thought to take pictures of my eats as much, lately. Which is sad because Pat and I had the hugest, most delicious tofu stir-fry last night. Yup, Pat ate tofu :D!! I found one that I’d not tried before, – Taifun Smoked Tofu with Herbs and Sunflower Seeds. We found it in the Health Food store in town and although it was pretty pricey, I picked it up – and I’d do it again ;)!! It was great!! Firmer than any other tofu I’d tried and had amazing flavour and a lovely “chew” from the sunflower seeds. I will be buying again ..when I can afford it, that is 😉

Other things I’ve had recently have been lots and LOTS of bananas, homemade coconut butter on crispbread and homemade any-fruit sorbets – recipe coming up!!

Anyways, onto the title of this post. Where’s the juice?? Well, I am going to do a 7-day juice-and-smoothie challenge. The come-about of this challenge for me is quite a story.

First, I was looking for a juicer. Why?? Because I wanted to make juices and smoothies, thanks to the blog-world, yet again!! So I looked high and low on the internet, in catalogues, 4 or 5 different shops, and finally found that the one with the best reviews ((and raves, even!!)) was the Philips HR1861. This juicer is top-of-the-range at a low price, and The HR1861 has a wide chute, so there is minimum prep-work needed. You can put in whole apples, without even halving them first and what’s more, it can juice 3 at a time, too!! Fresh, live apple juice in a matter of seconds. Yes.

But it doesn’t stop there, ohh no!! When I purchased my juicer, it came with a free juicing book, by the one-and-only Jason Vale, a.k.a THE JUICE MASTER!!  Not heard of him?? Then click on the link!! I got this book:

..and it is a great place to start for new juicers ;). There are over 100 simple and gorgeous juices and smoothies in this book, as well as a “3-day cleanse” which is quite a fun challenge. I’ve done it once so far, and now I want to do it properly. With the 7 days programme!! The programme is actually called 7 lbs in 7 Days, but I really want to follow it because I’ve read so many reviews about how people feel AFTER doing the programme. Customers say that they no longer get cravings, feel worn-down, hungry and that they want to keep being healthy!! This is what I am aiming for.

I have quite a lot of trouble getting to sleep, getting an average of 5 hours a night, sometimes none at-all.. My skin is dry and my hands get so bad in the winter that they actually peel and bleed – not nice!! I also suffer from depression and anxiety, which speaks for itself. But I see new hop in this programme and think that I can really benefit from it.

I should hopefully be starting to juice tomorrow, as today I still have things in the fridge to use up, and the last of it should be gone tonight!!

My Dad helped me to get all the ingredients, and there are a LOT of ingredients!! Here is some of what my diet will include over the next 7 days:

  • 76 Organic Apples
  • 5 Organic Avocados
  • 7 Organic Pineapples
  • 5 1/2 Organic Cucumbers
  • Lots of Cinnamon – yess!!
  • Greens: Spinach, Kale, Alfalfa, Spirulina, Wheatgrass.. all organic, of course!!

and more!! Now I’m ready to embark on my juicy adventure that I’m sure I will continue on for years to come!!

I have tried quite a few of Jason’s recipes from the book, Keeping It Simple:

As you might have guessed, the first and the third one here contain lots of beetroot. Which has its own special little side-effect :S.Don’t think I need to continue there..

As well as the Keeping It Simple book, I’ve now bought 7lbs in 7 Days and Turbo-Charge Your Life in 14 Days. I highly recommend all these books and also that you visit this site.

Green Quinoa Mix-Up

Now, this was another recipe I whipped up especially for St. Patty’s Day. It’s a really simple dish really, pretty similar to my Bulgar Mix-Up.

Simple and Quick Quinoa dish:

  •  1 serving plain-cooked Quinoa
  • about 2T liquid of choice ((Stock; Water; Coconut Milk might be nice 🙂 !!))
  • 2 handfuls of Spinach
  • handful of Sugar-Snap Peas
  • about 7 Brussels Sprouts ((or sub if you don’t like them – peas; kale; green beans; green pepper; etc..))
  • about 1/2 a Courgette/Zucchini
  • 1-2 T Soy Sauce
  • 1 T White Wine Vinegar / Light Malt Vinegar

Start by getting out a small sacucepan and a wok or frying pan. Cut your veggies to desired size and set to one side.

In the saucepan, add the cooked quinoa and the 2T liquid and heat through gently. Then add the spinach, turn heat right down and cover.

Now cook the veg – over a medium-high heat, stir-fry the veg in the wok / frying pan, starting with the harder veg ((sprouts, pepper if using, green beans)) and finishing off with the sugar-snaps and courgette.

When the veg is almost cooked, uncover the quinoa and spinach and turn up the heat a bit. Mix it up, then remove from heat and add to the veg.

Now turn the heat right up and splash in the soy sauce and vinegar, moving it about so that it doesn’t stick too much. Heat through for only a minute.

Tip into a bowl and you’re done!! See, simple 🙂 .

Of course I topped mine with some Peanut Butter 😉 :
